OVERVIEW

The Breagh Gas Field is located in the North Sea. A 20” pipeline transports hydrocarbon fluids from the Breagh Alpha Platform to the Teesside Gas Processing Plant (TGPP) terminal at Seal Sands, for processing and gas export to the National Grid National Transmission System gas pipeline.

DESCRIPTION

The scope for the TGPP ICP & HV Infrastructure Project included the establishment of a new 66kV point of supply within the adjacent Northern Powergrid (NPg) 66kV Seal Sands Substation. A new 20MVA 66kV metering substation compound was established, including all civil, building, electrical, control, ancillary equipment, cabling, earthing, and 66kV / fibre optic cabling between the site and Seal Sands 66kV Substation. IUS undertook all contestable works as an ICP for adoption by NPg on completion. 

A new 66/11kV compound was established, including all civil, building, electrical (66/11kV transformers and main intake 11kV switchboard), control, ancillary equipment, cabling, earthing, and cabling to remote equipment including the new compressor unit, 2 x 11kV Switchboards, and all ancillary interfaces. 

As an ICP, IUS also carried out the 66kV contestable works under accreditation to the Lloyds Register (LR) National Electricity Registration Scheme (NERS), with technical assessments undertaken at key stages throughout the project.

OVERVIEW

Network Rail awarded IUS the contract for the replacement of the existing 11kV distribution substation at Leeds City Station. The existing oil filled switchgear was replaced with new apparatus. The works were coordinated to incorporate changes to the Northern Powergrid equipment.

DESCRIPTION

Owing to existing 11kV switchgear at Leeds City Station reaching the end of its life span, a solution was required for the seamless renewal of the switchgear, whilst maintaining supplies to an operational train station. The former location of the existing 11kV substation was below ground in an area known as the ‘Dark Arches’. The train station was built on a set of vaulted arches with an area occupying distribution substations.

Logistically the location of this existing substation was unsuitable, therefore a purpose built substation was constructed at platform level, containing both Northern Powergrid and Network Rail equipment in separate sides of the building.

Two parallel 11kV feeders were taken directly from Northern Powergrid’s Whitehall Road primary substation. The approximate route length was 0.25 miles. Two parallel circuits then fed the Network Rail FKI Eclipse switchgear.

Each of the six Network Rail 11kV circuits supplied six 11,000/433V ground mounted transformers. These transformers were resupplied via new 11kV cabling. IUS managed all the critical power outages to deliver the works whilst trains continued to operate.

OVERVIEW

IUS delivered this work under our as an accredited Independent Connections Provider (ICP). Therefore, the works were carried out to the adoptable standards of the Distribution Network Operator, Northern Powergrid (NPg). The scope included the design, procurement, and installation of a 20kV distribution substation, low voltage sub-mains cabling, and a replacement customer low voltage switchboard to provide an increased supply capacity to the Tosoh Quartz factory in Greencroft, County Durham. The facility produces quartz glassware for the semiconductor industry for use in the processing of integrated circuits.

DESCRIPTION

IUS project managed the installation of the substation building to specification. The 115- meter feeder route encompassed 2 x 185mm aluminium 20kV XLPE Triplex cables to the point of connection onto the NPg network. Cable trenches were excavated on both private land and the public highway. IUS HV electrical fitters completed the installation of a 20kV
ABB safe plus ring main unit, 500kVA transformer with close coupled LV cabinet, earthing, protection, and metering cabling. IUS HV Jointers carried out the HV cable terminations. An IUS protection engineer conducted the pre-commissioning and witness testing for NPg. The IUS Senior Authorised Person provided the necessary safety documentation and oversight of the works. Customer LV sub mains cables were installed from the substation into the factory on high-level containment to supply a new low-voltage switchboard. Existing factory supplies were reconnected to the new switchboard during a planned outage giving the customer scope for their future expansion plans.
