OVERVIEW

Via our team in Dublin, Integrated Utility Services (IUS) undertook the installation of three sets of steps at River Valley Park in Swords, on behalf of Fingal County Council.

The objective of the project was to provide safe and accessible pedestrian steps in the park, while adhering to strict safety, environmental, and engineering standards. The scope of work included the removal of existing sleeper steps, installation of drainage systems, and the construction of new steps, which were uniquely designed to blend seamlessly with the park’s surroundings.

DESCRIPTION

River Valley Park is a public park, managed by Fingal County Council, giving access to green areas bounding the Ward River.

The scope of works consisted of retrofitting 3 sets of individually designed steps, to replace the existing dilapidated walkway, to facilitate safe access/egress to a series of paths throughout the park. This was particularly in light of increased usage arising from a change in work/life behaviour as a consequence of Covid. The solution was achieved via the compliant design of outdoor access infrastructure, which uniquely compliments the environment.

Before the commencement of work at River Valley Park, a comprehensive set of preparatory works was taken to ensure safety and efficiency. A site-specific risk assessment was carried out to identify and mitigate potential hazards. The existing sleeper steps were removed carefully, with excavation and base material levelling conducted to prepare for the new steps.

Drainage pipes were installed in parallel with the step construction, ensuring appropriate water management. The new steps were installed progressively, starting from the bottom, with concrete landings, step rungs, and side legs being placed, followed by backfilling and the installation of cellular paver grids filled with gravel.

Throughout the project, attention was given to environmental and safety considerations, including waste management, public safety through fencing and signage, and the protection of the nearby watercourse with sandbags acting as silt traps. The outcome delivered provides a durable, safe access way, whilst maintaining the integrity of the park’s environment.

The successful installation of the walkways at River Valley Park in Swords highlights IUS’ ability to plan and execute a complex project in a busy public space. By adhering to rigorous safety procedures, utilising the latest equipment, and following a structured sequence of works, the project was completed on time and in line with the requirements of Fingal County Council.

The new steps provide a safer, more accessible path for park visitors, while the careful attention to environmental impact ensures the park’s natural beauty remains intact for future generations.

“Fingal County Council is pleased with the successful completion of the River Valley Park steps project, which has significantly enhanced pedestrian access while preserving the park's natural beauty. IUS demonstrated exceptional planning, safety standards, and environmental responsibility throughout the process, delivering a unique solution that serves our community's needs while safeguarding the park's surroundings.”

OVERVIEW

Skerries Mills is a heritage centre, and a popular tourist attraction. As part of the overall upgrade of Skerries Mills and the surrounding parks, undertaken by Fingal County Council, IUS was contracted to design, manufacture and install a pedestrian bridge over the brook.

This also included installing new tar paths to link up the various access points to the Mills and up grading the existing car park. The scope of works also included duct installation for ESB and the supply and installation of lighting bollards.

DESCRIPTION

The project involved the design, manufacture, and installation of a pedestrian bridge and handrails. ESB and public lighting ducts were run through the bridge sections to replace the existing overhead line network with underground cables. This required the installation of a new ESB mini substation in the car park, for which IUS installed the sub-base.

New public lighting ducts and pots had to be installed along with additional ducting for CCTV cables to facilitate future improvements. All new road layout signage and markings were supplied and installed by IUS.

This project also included the redesign and improvement of the existing car park. This required the planting of 8 trees using the Strata Cell Urban Tree planting technology. The plaza surface had to be tarred with a buff resin-bonded gravel overlay, edged with granite cobble setts.

OVERVIEW

As part of the Balrothery town upgrade and the new traffic calming measures undertaken by Fingal County Council, IUS has successfully completed two traffic junction improvements. This included the role of PSCS, all associated ancillary works, and the supply of all materials.

IUS was also the first contractor to be appointed to undertake the installation of the new Tree Technology on behalf of the Fingal County Council. IUS has supplied and installed 2 trees using the Strata Cell Urban Tree planting system, within the mini plaza buildout.

DESCRIPTION

The project involved the removal of the roundabouts and the realignment of the junctions to create a T-junction. This required the installation of new slip form kerbing, storm water drainage gullies and manholes, ensuring all levels were correct to prevent waterlogging. New public lighting ducts and pots had to be installed, together with additional ducting for ESB cables to facilitate overhead line diversions in the future. All new road layout signage and markings were supplied and installed by IUS.

This junction improvement also required a build-out of a mini public plaza, which, in the future, would display an art sculpture. This included echo channel drainage, the provisions for art sculpture lighting, and the planting of 2 trees using the Strata Cell Urban Tree planting technology. The plaza surface had to be tarred with a buff resin-bonded gravel overlay, edged with granite cobble setts. IUS also removed and replaced over 300m² of concrete footpaths and supplied and installed over 50 bollards on the project.

Integrated Utility Services played a key role in delivering critical elements of the Balrothery town upgrade. Their work on the two traffic junction improvements, was completed to a high standard and with minimal disruption. We were also pleased to have IUS as the first contractor to install the new Tree Technology on behalf of Fingal County Council. The successful installation of two trees using the Strata Cell Urban Tree planting system within the mini plaza buildout reflects their capability and commitment to the project."

There was a requirement for signalled traffic calming measures, which IUS have provided, resulting in a higher degree of road safety.

DESCRIPTION

This scheme involved the provision of civil works for a new controlled pedestrian crossing with a raised crossing platform. Drainage and ducting works for new traffic lights and ESB Networks had to be installed. This involved carrying out an open-cut road crossing, the provision of concrete bases for control cabinets, and mini pillars. Three manholes and four gullies were installed to divert storm water into an existing drain. Existing footpaths were upgraded, and 40m of new paths were installed. Two round top speed ramps were also installed to prevent speeding as vehicles approached the pedestrian crossing. Advanced traffic signage and road markings were supplied and installed.

"Integrated Utility Services delivered an excellent standard of work on the traffic calming project in Ratoath. Given the location’s high footfall, adjacent to several busy community facilities, it was essential that the works were completed efficiently and to the highest safety standards. IUS provided signalled traffic calming measures that have significantly improved road safety in the area. Their professionalism, clear communication, and ability to manage works in a live environment were key to the project’s success."
