Project

Substation for 174 New Homes Development

Location

Selby Road - Howden - Goole

SERVICES PROVIDED
  • HV and LV network design
  • Installation of 11kV substation to include HV switchgear, 800kVA transformer and 5 way LV fuse board to supply 174 new homes
  • Construction to the adoptable standards of Northern Powergrid (Npg) and ESP Utilities Group (ESPUG)
OVERVIEW

The scope of works included the design, procurement and installation of UDE (Unit Distribution Equipment) substation consisting of Schneider Electric RN2-C HV switchgear, 800kVA transformer, complete with a close coupled 5-way LV board. The UDE, once energised, provided power to 174 new homes on the Saddlers Grange development in Howden. This substation is dual owned by Northern Powergrid (NPg) and ESP Utilities Group (ESPUG), therefore constructed to the adoptable standards of both parties.

DESCRIPTION

IUS installed approximately 300m of 3 x 1 core 300mm aluminium XLPE cable from the substation location to the agreed point of connection, together with an 80m length of 70mm bare copper earth, which forms part of the HV earthing arrangement. IUS then carried out excavation works around the substation building to install this earthing system. The programme was critical as the housing developer had prospective homeowners eagerly waiting the handover of their new properties. IUS successfully met the expectations of Lovell Homes and their customers by executing our works within the allotted timeframes.

The IUS protection engineer carried out the pre-commissioning tests including primary and secondary injection testing. Once the UDE had been successfully tested our HV authorised cable jointers attended site to carry out the HV cabletermination and LV terminations at the 5-way LV board.

As well as IUS cable jointers and the protection engineer, other trained, authorised and competent members of the site delivery team included our electrical fitters and the Senior Authorised Person responsible for safety documentation. The key points of contact for Lovell Homes was the IUS project manager and project coordinator, who have the responsibility, as per there titles, for the management and coordination of all the works. The IUS team all contributed to the safe and successful energisation of an essential substation asset.

Project

Generator Connection in Lieu of Substation Connection for an 85 New Homes Development

Location

Toot Lane - Boston - Lincolnshire

SERVICES PROVIDED
  • Two 50kVA 3 phase generators
  • Installation of MEMESgenerators
  • Connection of cut-out and breach joint termination
  • 10m earthing arrangements
  • Secured compound area created by Gleeson Homes
OVERVIEW

The scope of these works was to provide the Developer with a temporary supply as the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) was unable to provide the substation permanent connection, with new house owners ready to move in.

To enable power to be available it was agreed with the Developer and DNO that a generator and back up connection would be installed temporarily.

DESCRIPTION

IUS installed two 50kVA 3 phase generators at the agreed point of temporary connection within the lockable compound provided by Gleeson Homes. This was coupled with a 200 Amp cut-out and a corresponding breach joint. The cut-out was housed within a lockable unit provided by the Developer. This work involved an IUS team, which included a Senior Authorised Person (SAP), Project Manager, Project Coordinator, Cable Jointers and an Electrical Fitter who was to test the earthing arrangement.

This element of the works was critical to the developer meeting their connection targets, and during adverse weather conditions, under the supervision of the IUS SAP the generators were connected to the mains supply successfully. All the Low Voltage connections activity as well as the relevant tests were carried out by appropriately trained, authorised and competent personnel.

Gleeson Homes Head of Technical and their Managing Director thanked IUS for carrying out this work and meeting their mid-year target completions which had been at risk. This enabled their customers to move into their brand-new Gleeson home.
