Position Overview
A Design Manager is required to lead and develop a multi-skilled team of engineering colleagues to deliver the detailed designs for all workstream areas and to drive the provision of an enhanced level of support to the Operations team to ensure all relevant contractual obligations are met.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the IUS design team to provide detailed designs for all workstreams across the business
- Enhance current design processes to reduce company risk and liability via formal validation, verification, and approval prior to and during construction
- Improve internal processes and procedures to ensure all designs completed within IUS are appropriately checked, validated, verified, and approved prior to being issued for construction
- Control design liabilities by implementing robust approval procedures to ensure all designs meet performance parameters and client expectations
- Build an operations-based design team to strengthen design capability with regards to resource, training, competence, and experience
- Develop competencies to allow IUS to be appointed as a Principal Designer under CDM regulations
- Develop and maintain a suite of IUS design procedures, standards, specifications, and guidance documents
- Maintain continuity and consistency of design work for all relevant workstreams ensuring that delivery timescales and targets are not affected
- Design engineers and technicians are progressively upskilled to meet current and future work programme demands
- Evidence that the team are achieving optimised utilisation and are meeting and exceeding customer charter targets
- Create a robust quality assurance process for all relevant project, contract, or framework designs

Essential qualifications & attributes
- HNC in Electrical Engineering or Degree in Electrical Engineering
- Professional Registration to Incorporated or Chartered Engineer level
- Experience years’ experience of working within an electricity distribution network operator type business or similar in a design role
- Network analysis and specialist studies using company software to ensure network operation and compliance with prevailing standards such as ER P28, G5 and G99
- Protection systems
- Full UK Driving License
Desirable qualification & attributes
- Design of cable networks, overhead lines, and substation installations at 33kV, 66kV and 132kV
- Experience of leading, coaching and mentoring a design team

Nissan utilise IUS for both substation construction and maintenance at their car manufacturing plant in Sunderland. Ian McClelland, a Nissan Electrical Engineer, has thanked the IUS team for all of the support provided to assist the operation of their plant, which is critical to production.
University of Leeds
IUS design, procure and construct contestable connections including at the University of Leeds. Simon Gough, Head of Engineering Services sent his appreciation to IUS for the assistance with a Northern Powergrid 33kV connection application, associated with a new primary substation.
ESP Utilities Group
ESP Utilities Group are an Independent Distribution Network Operator and IUS deliver contestable connections to their adoptable standards. Persimmon Homes
Persimmon Homes thanked the IUS Multi Utility team for their good performance in recent months and on the Garforth and Skelmanthorpe schemes in particular. These are challenging developments and Samuel Sowery the Technical Director recognised that, “IUS have gone above and beyond to complete the works.”
WGM Engineering
WGM have recognised an outstanding level of service provided by IUS at Dalmarnock Wastewater Treatment Works. Scott Gallagher, a WGM Senior Contracts Manager, paid tribute to the performance of the IUS team, stating “I was delighted with the professionalism, flexibility and technical expertise, when assisting WGM in restoring essential supplies to the site.”
CMDP
CMDP engaged with IUS to deliver the power to a new Water Treatment Works for Southern Water at Burham Water. Following a shutdown, Neil Cuthbert of CDMP commented, "Sounds like an amazing effort by all to achieve this milestone, which will provide the site resilience. Just goes to show what can be done by a great team of committed professionals."
BELCO
IUS has delivered a number of prestigious projects for BELCO in Bermuda, including the 22kV substations and 4kV substations associated with the new International Airport. The client’s representative, Jonathan Pedro praised IUS for delivering the project on time and to budget, with no health and safety related incidents.
Northern Powergrid
IUS delivers a number of frameworks for Northern Powergrid including secondary SCADA. The Norther Powergrid Delivery Engineer, Jamie Braithwaite said, "I've found the IUS team to be professional, customer focused & ready to help support the SCADA project at all times.
